Easter Time

As we prepare for Easter here in Kilcoskan we are creating some interesting art.

We started to make some wool eggs. We had to experiment with the amount of glue we needed.

We will see how they turn out after they have dried.

Mother's Day

We all wanted to show our mams' how much they mean to us. So we made some beautiful cards to show we care today.

Today we tried our hand a a bit of weaving using a heart as our starting image.

Ethics and Religious Beliefs project

As part of our ERB project here in Kilcoskan we are taking part in lots of different and fun activities.

At a whole school level we took part in the KNS code competition. But here in 5th & 6th we delved into the topic in more detail.

For one part of the project we are taking part in some very interesting philosophy sessions in which we talk about some challenging topics such as:

What is religion? If you could ask God one question what would it be? What shape would you give to a religious space that could be used for all religions? .....to name a few!

Next we decided to learn a bit more in-depth information about specific religions.

We divided up into pairs and picked a religion out of a hat. We used our iPads and reference books to complete a project about our chosen religion. After we had completed our projects we presented them to the rest of the class's to learn about the various religions.

As the final part of our project we got to visit two places of worship here in Dublin city.

The first place we visited was theDublin  Mosque. We got a tour of the Mosque by a very informative tour guide who answered all our questions for us.

Then we walked round the corner to the first Synagogue in Dublin on Walworth Road. This area used to be know as the Jewish quarter. There is a lovely museum here in an old converted house. We got a tour of the museum and synagogue from a lovely tour guide who was very interesting. She gave us lots of information on the history of the Jewish community in Ireland and of the Jewish religion itself.

Over the course of our project we learnt lots about different religions found all over the world and how they compare and contrast to our own.

Pancake Tuesday

To celebrate Pancake Tuesday we were lucky that some of the parents brought in some delicious pancakes for us to enjoy.

We were able to fill them with all our favourite fillings.

Some of us were really lucky and got a pancake in the shape of a bear. We think it made it taste even better!

It was a great treat to have to set us up for the coming Season of Lent.

The importance of soil

We were learning in science about the importance of soil this week.

One aspect we learnt about was the composition of soil. We found out that soil is made up of various things.

We also learnt about the percentage of fertile soil that is actually available in the world. 1/32 of the earth's surface is all that is available to farmers and gardeners alike. We also leant about how desification and increased sea levels are making the land available decrease every year.
