Hello everyone!

Welcome to the 5th and 6th class blog. Have a look to see what we get up to in school! Follow us as we share our learning experiences with you throughout the school year.

Christmas Science Experiment Time

Continuing with our Christmas theme in science today we experimented with dissolving Candy Canes.

We predicted how long we thought the candy canes would take to disolve in various liquids.

We put a small amount of the candy canes in water, hot water, oil and vinegar. The results were quiet surprising. It didn't take as long as we thought for the candy cane to disolve in the water!

Christmas Art Time

It was time to weave some Christmas trees from green paper today. The method is simple but you have to be careful not to cut through the edge.

Section by section is then glued down.

The finished project is quiet pretty.

With coloured chalk we created some very pretty Christmas bauble art today.

We imagined what the baubles would look like close up on the Christmas tree. Each of our pictures turned out really unique.

Christmas Play Preparations

We had a full run through today. It all went very well and we are excited to show all the mams, dads, grandparents, aunties and uncles all our hard work!

We are practicing hard this week learning our lines for our Christmas play.

With a little help we wrote our play ourselves. It is all about Saving Santa. We won't say too much as we don't want to spoil the surprise but you are in for a treat when you come to see our play!

Here we are creating the props for our play.

The Girl with the Pearl Earring

We learnt about a very famous painting today called The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

This painting had been lost for over 200 years before being discovered again!

It is an unique painting in that the subject is not posing formally rather she is glancing casually over her shoulder.

The artist Johannes Vermeer is Dutch. He painted this work in oil. He was a very talented painter who's use of shading was very skilled.

After chatting about his painting we set about recreating it ourselves using a variety of forms, paint and pencil.

Let's make some paddle boats!

We collected plastic bottles that we were finished with this week. With them and pencils and an elastic band we tried to create a paddle boat.

We had to try and create a boat that would move under its own steam!

There was a lot of discussion around what would make a good design and where would the boat get the energy from.

Each group came up with its own unique design. Unfortunately not all of them worked but sure that is part of the scientific process!

We had lots of fun experimenting and getting water everywhere!

KNS code

Our students union with input from each of the classes created a special KNS Code.

Our code is short and snappy which helps to keep us focused on the important work we have to do each day.

As part of creating a happy school environment where everyone is welcome and appreciated we spoke about appropriate ways of talking and playing with our friends. We spoke about what we can do if we have disagreements too (which is unfortunately part of life!)

Painting with material!

Painting with material you say! No we haven't lost the run of ourselves!

We explored creating a scene out of material instead of paint. It was a really interesting experience. We learnt the importance of planning our work and making sure we used large geometric shapes as much as possible.

Our pieces turned out lovely. Each one unique.

Artist Study - Jackson Pollock

Today we learnt about a new artist.

Jackson Pollock was an artist from America with a very unique way of painting. He used lots of different materials to paint with. Sometimes he even just threw or splattered the paint onto the canvas!

We examined some of his pieces of work and then set about creating our own.

I think we really stretched our imaginations and created some beautiful pieces of work today.

Crazy Science Lab

As part of our Halloween themed day we took part in some spooky themed science experiments.

We made some witches brew. The foam was really creepy bubbling over the cup!

We tried to make Frankin Worms but they didn't work out for us!

We made some Ghost hands. They turned out really well!

We even experimented with making some static electricity.

We had a ball getting hands on and experimenting with the amounts of the ingredients to make the spooky experiments! Happy Halloween everyone!

Hyacinth Experiment

We started an experiment today in which we hope to see the effect on the distance from water on the growth of Hyacinth bulbs.

We put three bulbs on top of three plastic bottles. We filled up the bottles with water to three different levels: 10cm, 8cm and 6 cm high.

We need to leave them in the dark press for a week then we can take them out and leave them on the windowsill.

The bulb is unique in that it doesn't need soil to grow as it has all the food it needs in itself. All it needs in water!

Check back to see how they are getting on!

Maths Week 2016

We had fun trying to figure out some puzzles as part of Maths Week this week.

One of the puzzles we worked on was based on trying to get a straight row & diagonal row to equal 38. But we can only use the numbers 1-19 once!

Halloween 2016

Today was the last day before our Holidays. We got all dressed up!

As a special treat today since we have worked so hard and earned all our marbles we got make pizza.

We started to get into the Halloween mood today here in 5th/6th.

We imagined what some pesky witches' cats would be getting up to and created some Peek A Boo cats.

When all of our work was put together we think it really stands out.

We made some more art today.

We even made some crazy pumpkins!
