Christmas Science Experiment Time

Continuing with our Christmas theme in science today we experimented with dissolving Candy Canes.

We predicted how long we thought the candy canes would take to disolve in various liquids.

We put a small amount of the candy canes in water, hot water, oil and vinegar. The results were quiet surprising. It didn't take as long as we thought for the candy cane to disolve in the water!

Christmas Art Time

It was time to weave some Christmas trees from green paper today. The method is simple but you have to be careful not to cut through the edge.

Section by section is then glued down.

The finished project is quiet pretty.

With coloured chalk we created some very pretty Christmas bauble art today.

We imagined what the baubles would look like close up on the Christmas tree. Each of our pictures turned out really unique.

Christmas Play Preparations

We had a full run through today. It all went very well and we are excited to show all the mams, dads, grandparents, aunties and uncles all our hard work!

We are practicing hard this week learning our lines for our Christmas play.

With a little help we wrote our play ourselves. It is all about Saving Santa. We won't say too much as we don't want to spoil the surprise but you are in for a treat when you come to see our play!

Here we are creating the props for our play.

The Girl with the Pearl Earring

We learnt about a very famous painting today called The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

This painting had been lost for over 200 years before being discovered again!

It is an unique painting in that the subject is not posing formally rather she is glancing casually over her shoulder.

The artist Johannes Vermeer is Dutch. He painted this work in oil. He was a very talented painter who's use of shading was very skilled.

After chatting about his painting we set about recreating it ourselves using a variety of forms, paint and pencil.

Let's make some paddle boats!

We collected plastic bottles that we were finished with this week. With them and pencils and an elastic band we tried to create a paddle boat.

We had to try and create a boat that would move under its own steam!

There was a lot of discussion around what would make a good design and where would the boat get the energy from.

Each group came up with its own unique design. Unfortunately not all of them worked but sure that is part of the scientific process!

We had lots of fun experimenting and getting water everywhere!
